So you’re the best man. Your duties include throwing an awesome bachelor party for the groom before he makes the lunge into monogamy. You’re also responsible for helping with wedding arrangements and hanging onto the rings, but wait there is one other thing the best man is responsible for…oh that’s right a speech. You know the speech, the speech in front of two hundred of the bride and grooms families and friends. The speech that honors and gives blessing to the couples new found wedding bliss. If you’re a best man in this situation your probably thinking oh it’s just a speech it’s not like it has to be memorable like The Gettysburg Address. This may be true, your words might not have to go down in history but the best man’s speech is extremely important for the wedding. It helps set the mood for the reception. A poor speech can put a damper on the party. If a good speech is given, that can bring joy to all guests this will create a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for the party to escalate. This is why this article offers three crucial points to giving the perfect best man speech.

The first and most important point is finding a balance in your speech between humor and seriousness. As the best man you must understand the main goal of a best man speech is to celebrate the love of the newly weds. Make sure in your speech there is a portion doing just that in which you discuss how much you can tell the couple is in love and stress the responsibilities that go along with marriage and most importantly don’t forget to wish the couple a wonderful marriage on your behalf. Now being heart felt and serious is fine but too much is going to bore the party to death. They are going to feel like there listening to an economics lecture. This is where your humor factor comes in. Humor is always a good way to get the party in good spirits and not only that, it will help ease the best man’s anxiety. If the best man sees his audience laughing he will pick up on theier positive vibes and become in good spirits himself, which will only allow him to deliver his speech better. Humor can easily be put into a speech using a joke in the introduction or comparing marrage to something funny in an analogy. The one that will always work is a funny story about the bride or groom before they were married. This a guaranteed laugh.

Next is time limit. Your probably thinking how long should a best man speech be. Well put it this way a best man speech should be longer than it takes the DJ to announce you and shorter then a monologue from a Broadway show. This does not mean time should cause you to compromise your speech. If you have a witty or humorous line don’t cut it out due to time constraints. I personally recommend a best man speech being no shorter then one minute but no longer than four. Anyone who can find a midway point between that should be perfectly fine.

Lastly is preparation. Regardless if a speech is for a graduation or a wedding, a good speech is well prepared. Preparation can be done in three ways. The first is research, now no best man speech doesn’t require research like someone going for a PH.D but it couldn’t hurt if the best man took some initiative to look up previous best man speeches on the internet or ask someone who has given a best man speech in the past. After you take in all your research you can adopt the points you felt could help your speech and tailor it accordingly.

After focusing on research you should focus next on presentation. Focusing on how you present your speech will only make you more prepared and ultimately improve your confidence at game time. The best way to do this is by practice. So practice your speech in front of family, friends and whoever is willing to listen. The more your speech is practiced the better it will be delivered at the party. With practice your only going to become more accustomed to speaking in front of groups of people. When it comes to presentation it is important to work on body language and eye contact. You always want to make sure your hands are not moving too much and your not fidgeting. This gives off that your nervous.

Lastly when it comes to presentation always work on your vocals. For example there might be parts of your speech in which you want to stress the words louder or change the tone of your voice. This would be like going from Humorous to serious. You don’t want to seem like your reading from a book. Let the audience know by the tone of your voice that your changing directions.

If these three crucial points are followed you can rest assure you will give a successful best man speech. The last thing I will leave you with is remember to have fun with the speech, be creative and original. The more you make this speech your own the more confident you will be delivering it.

Before you can think of the best wedding speech ideas you need to know what the best wedding toast is. For example, you need to know how to write a good toasts for a wedding. This is done by making it short and sweet. Try and add a little bit of comedy in there, but at the same time, it has to be moving. There are tons of different ways you can take this, but rest assured that there are a ton of great toasting tips out there.

First of all, when coming up with ideas for your toast remember to think outside the box. Remember, a toast does not just have to be talking. A lot of times the best wedding toasts are song in a song. That is because music is made to get a lot of emotions across. However, if you sing a song, it is going to be a long toast. On that same note, people will not notice that it’s that long, because you will be singing. Also, try and do a toast with songs that are popular. You want it to be a song that everyone knows so that they will join in.

More can be done with poems. This is another great way to get a lot of emotions out in a short time span. Everyone loves unusual toasts because that means that it’s going to be different from what you normally see. Anything that gets people to think out of the box or say “wow I have never seen that before”, is good.

Last, but not least, the best wedding toasts are the ones that prove some kind of point. Do not worry about the toast ideas being so clever if they do not prove a point. Trying to get your emotions across in a different way is the whole point behind the wedding toast ideas If you are not getting it across, you might as well stop. However, if you sing a song, it is going to be a long toast. Have you ever been asked to write a best man speech? Chances are, the request would have come from someone very close to you - like your buddy or best friend. And because they are very close to you, you find yourself obliged to say “yes”, even though you know nuts about writing best man speeches. Now before you go into a frenzy and get all stressed out because you have absolutely no idea how to write a best man speech, don’t worry. There is always help readily available - if you know where to look that is.

But before you even begin, it’s important to understand what a good best man speech is, and is not. At least that will give you something to shoot for. Otherwise, you would just be groping the dark, hoping to hit the target when you can’t even see it. Well, a good best man speech is something that is simple, concise, and communicates key messages about the couple about to get married.

These key messages are the “meat” of the entire speech. Get this wrong, and your whole speech is destined for failure. The main content should consist of real life examples of deeds that are accomplished by the groom. And you don’t want just any deed. You want deeds that are illustrative of the groom’s outstanding personality, or anything that points towards the direction that the groom is more than capable to handle the responsibilities and duties that come with a marriage. The whole point of including these vital examples is to inspire confidence - confidence in the groom that he can take good care of his family, and honor this sacred bond that ties two beautiful people together.

But coming up with examples of the groom’s past deeds is just part of the writing process. Perhaps the hardest part about writing a best man speech is possibly putting the deeds into words. The choice of words will make or break your best man speech. For this reason, it is best to refer to some best man speeches written by professionals.

Why professionals? Because professionals know the right words to use, so that you can express and deliver the entire speech in exactly the way you want it to. You want your speech to be flowing, like poetry, and be inspiring at the same time. That is the tricky part. And here is where the professionals can help. By referring to best man speeches written by professionals, you get to learn the right words to use, and the mistakes to avoid.

But is it worth the effort to go to all that trouble? You bet it is. After all, it’s your best friend’s wedding, and he deserves nothing but the best treatment from his closest friend - you! So take the time to scour through as many best man samples as you can. Be sure to choose from those written by professionals only, and make every effort to ensure that your best man speech turns out the way you want it to - perfect.

Eric Hartwell asked:

The best man is usually one of the groom’s closest friends or relatives, as the maid of honor is usually the bride’s most special girlfriend or sibling. However, why exactly do grooms have a best man?

The Best Man in History

Before, the grooms did not court and woo their ladies into the altar. It was usual for a groom to kidnap a fair lady to become his bride. On his search for a bride, a groom usually took with him a trusted friend or soldier.

The best man was the groom’s lookout and spy. He was also tasked to help the groom succeed by driving away the bride’s relatives. After all, the groom was kidnapping his bride, usually from other tribes or clans. The bride’s relatives wouldn’t have given her up very easily and there’s bound to be trouble. Thus, the groom took with him somebody - his best man - who could fight with him, protect him, and help him accomplish his mission.

It’s hard to imagine today’s best man wielding a sword and wearing armor to protect the groom from harm, but that was just what the best man of times past did. That was the best man’s first and foremost role, then.

The Savvy Best Man

The best man of today has exchanged his sword for a champagne glass and his armor for a tuxedo. You’ll see the savvy best man in weddings everywhere giving out a *** and usually embarrassing (for the groom, anyway) speech. Indeed, the best man’s role in modern times is drastically different from his traditional role. However, one thing remains the same - the best man is still important in a wedding’s success or lack thereof.

The best man is still the groom’s best man, the groom’s trusted right hand. From day one until the end of the wedding ceremonies and post wedding ceremonies, the best man is the groom’s one-man support system and his trusted adviser.

The best man is in charge of making preparations for the bachelor’s party that every groom (as well as his set of rowdy friends) expects to get before he ties the knot. The best man will have to think of the theme, the venue, the entertainment, the food, and the attendees of the bachelor party.

On the wedding day itself, the best man is tasked with the job of making sure that the groom will arrive on time for his wedding. He will arrange for the groom’s transportation, even acting as the groom’s personal chauffeur if necessary. The best man is also “Keeper of the Ring.” This means exactly what you think it means and this is not in any way related to Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. During the ceremonies, he’ll be passing the bride’s ring to the groom.

During the wedding reception, the best man will have to give a toast to the bride and the groom. After the wedding, if no other arrangements were made, the best man will drive the newlyweds to the airport or wherever they wish to be dropped off. He can also be the one tasked with the return of rentals as well as the safekeeping of belated wedding gifts.

The best man is important in weddings for he has various responsibilities that can make a great difference in how a wedding turns out. More than his ‘assistive’ roles, however, the best man’s most important role of all is bearing witness to his best friend’s or close relative’s marriage.

Weddings are a time of fun and sharing life’s adventures and experiences. Most of the time, as the best man in a wedding, you traditionally will give a wedding toast at the reception. Are you ready to give your best man toast at the wedding reception? If not, don’t worry! You shouldn’t stress out over giving a wedding toast, as it is one of the easiest things to do once you put your mind to it!

We all know writing a toast can be tough, especially if you’re not someone who writes on a daily basis. There are many ways to make it easier on yourself, though, and you should take advantage of them!

Have you ever considered using a pre-written wedding toast? This is an easy way to assist you in your writing process. Using a pre-written speech enables you to craft your masterpiece in an easy to follow manner. Not only that, but you’ll be able to use this as an “outline”, which will help you mold together your ideas perfectly.

This brings me to my next point: If you’re not going to use a pre-written toast, you need to create an outline of your ideas. This helps organize your thoughts so you can present them better. You’ll know exactly what points you should touch on, what stories you should go more in depth on and share, and what you only need to mention briefly.

Now, one last thing you should consider is the length of your toast. As a rule of thumb, it is normally customary that you speak for at least 3-4 minutes. This will enable to you share everything you want, and keep yourself from sharing too much and boring the crowd!

So, if you don’t already have a speech prepared, you should visit Wedding Speeches. Get prepared with pre-written speeches, quotes, one-liners, speech samples and more!

You’re all decked out in fancy dresses and tuxes. The audience’s expectations are high! Now, you have to deliver. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the bridesmaid, best man or father of the bride. Giving a speech or a toast at a wedding can be nerve racking. But, it doesn’t have to be if you follow some basic rules.

- Give Thanks - Thank the necessary people. This takes homework. Did Aunt Barbara create the lavish wedding cake? Did the new mother-in-law sew the bride’s elaborate wedding gown by hand? Did groom’s brother have his catering company cater the food?

- Funny Wedding Toasts - Add in humor and make it funny! The best speech is one that blends humor with sentimental moments. If it’s too sentimental, you’ll have guests crying in their beer - that’s when lighthearted humor can balance it out. But the same goes with having too many jokes…if your speech is composed entirely of jokes - stop - and add in a few serious and sentimental parts.

Best Man Speech: example of humorous speech or toast mixed with sentiment:

“Since meeting Sara, it’s been a pleasant sight to watch Marshall actually in the kitchen getting his hands dirty! That’s not the only thing… Marshall started doing dishes and doing his own laundry (instead of paying someone). Sara, thank you for helping him out!

Marshall, I’m blessed to be your younger brother. You have been a friend, a mentor and role model for me. I am so happy that you have found this woman filled with perfection to spend the rest of your life with!”

- Toast the Couple - If you’re toasting the groom, still make note of the bride. Does she look stunning in her dress? Has she brought out new and admirable qualities in the groom? Did she earn your respect while whitewater rafting with the groom? Likewise, if you’re toasting the bride, still make note of the groom.

- Speak from the Heart - If it means something to you, it will mean something to the audience. Don’t be afraid to get a little mushy. Draw the audience in.

Maid of Honor Speech: example speaking from the heart

“I’ve known Ami for quite some time, since high school, in fact. Ami and I were chemistry lab partners our sophomore year in high school. We had fun in that class and some of it actually involved learning chemistry! One concept that we studied was molecules and how “A molecule is the smallest particle of a substance that still retains its physical and chemical properties.”

Ami and Stuart, special moments are the molecules of life. I hope that you can cherish the sweet moments and use them to bind your lives together. But I know you will because I have seen you two together and you truly take the time to enjoy each other.”

* reprinted with permission from InstantWeddingToasts.com

- Get personal. Were you involved when the bride and groom met? Do they have children? What was the bride’s reaction when the groom proposed? Do they have nicknames for each other?

- Open and Close with a Bang! - Keep your best stuff at the beginning and end. You want - and need - a strong opener and a strong closer. Want examples of a great closer? Use a short Irish Wedding Toast, one that conveys your best wishes for their future or sums up their relationship perfectly.

- “Watch” the Clock - Don’t waste the audience’s time. Let’s face it; there are a lot of speeches and toasts at a wedding. If it’s not about the bride or groom, or doesn’t relate to love and marriage - cut it. Save the long or potentially embarrassing stories for the bachelor or bachelorette party. And speaking about time - be brief, not boring. And likewise, don’t be so short it’s not memorable. You can still have a short speech, but you must speak slower. A perfect short speech can be ruined by rushing.

- Practice makes Perfect - Look at the audience. This takes practice, usually in front of a mirror with a spoon in one hand and a toasting glass in the other. Practice until you look good, until you can watch yourself in the mirror - and ultimately look at the audience - while speaking. Drop all the “ums” and “uhs”. It means you have to practice out loud, and when you think you’ve got it, get an audience of a brother/sister/friend and practice one more time.

Remember, when you open your mouth, you want to sound just as good as you look! Ready? Set. Deliver!

Chris Tait asked:

You met up with your best buddy the day he bought the ring.  You reassured him that she’s his perfect match and you admire the playful outlook they share on life.  You co-hosted a nautical-themed engagement party that played up their shared love of sailing, and you know he had a great time, because he, who never dances, had to be dragged off the floor when the club closed.  You organized an amazing bachelor party in Dallas – 50-yard line tickets to see his all-time favorite team win the big game.  Bottom line, you have been…so far… a model best man.

As you are well aware, however, for most your performance as best man will come down to the speech you deliver at the wedding.  How do you ensure a speech that will cement your performance as the World’s Greatest Best Man? You keep doing what you’ve been doing, and make your speech all about your friend – his life’s path, his greatest passions, his annoying habits, the things that define him to those who love him most.

You could say, “Paul has been a good friend since we met back in college, and I’ve known since he first introduced me to Linda that he saw something special in her.  They share common interests and she even puts up with his more independent obsessions…”  Remarks like these are safe, but you should ask yourself if they could easily be spoken at any other couple’s wedding.  If the answer is yes, you have more work to do.

Let’s revisit these same lines with a personal spin worthy of your fun-loving friend from college who is a horrible dancer, an obsessed Dallas Cowboys fan, and an accomplished sailor.

Rather than stating that you met back in college, you should introduce your college roots while poking a little fun at something that defines their relationship, for example, their playful outlook.  “I had considered talking about Paul and Linda growing up, but unfortunately I didn’t know either of them until college, and to be honest with you, I haven’t seen any evidence to suggest that they have actually grown up yet.”

Next, share a fun memory from college, dig up a little harmless dirt and give everyone a laugh.  “Back in college, we cemented our friendship over many late nights at Bullwinkles, a popular bar just off campus.  It was there that I first witnessed the raw and still undiscovered talent of Paul’s rhythm. He would often empty the dance floor with his awkward moves that left all the ladies speechless - so speechless, in fact, they never spoke to him. Fortunately, Linda and her friends hung out elsewhere.”

Next, rather than mention that they share common interests and Linda puts up with his independent obsessions, get specific and keep the laughs rolling. “Not long after meeting Paul I was introduced to his first love, a love that has stood the test of time. I am of course talking about the Dallas Cowboys.  My strong advice to Linda is to tell him that you understand the offside penalty rule.  Of course, you don’t and never will, but it will save you hours of tedious explanations with salt and pepper shakers being moved around the table. Thankfully Linda shares Paul’s second great love: sailing.  Because let’s face it, when Paul starts going on about his beloved boat, there’s never a dull moment … it’s all dull.”

In this article I will explain the basic steps to preparing a wedding speech to remember.

There may come a time in your life when you are called upon to make a speech. Whether it is at work, a social function or a wedding it can be a daunting task especially if you have little experience or are the nervous type.

Making a wedding speech is usually where many of us are required to address a big audience and quite often for the first time.

The true art of delivering a sincere, heartfelt and interesting wedding speech is to prepare well in advance but on the day appear off the cuff and spontaneous.

Preparation

Preparation is the key aspect of planning your wedding speech. Make sure you allow several weeks before the big day. If you are the best man try and find out as much information as possible about the bride and groom and also their families as this may help you include a funny story or two.

However make sure that whatever information you gather is correct. The last thing you want to do is blurt out a story about the bride or groom that is untrue and leave them feeling uneasy and embarrassed in their seats.

An important point to remember when including any jokes is to ensure they are tasteful and will not upset or insult anyone in the audience.

Play it safe and keep to mildly humorous subjects or better still make yourself the **** of the jokes. Remember the audience is there to watch the bride and groom get hitched not to watch a comedian so you do not have to have the latest side splitting gags.

Also, keep in mind the wedding guests are on your side and are there to have a good time so generally will laugh at the slightest attempt at a funny line.

Preparing a good wedding speech is all about the details.

If you are an experienced speaker you may wish to deliver the speech from memory, however this is not advisable particularly if you are a novice which most of us are you will be better prepared if you have written notes to hand.

Your notes will be a lifeline should you clam up or lose your train of thought. Make sure your notes are short, clear and easy to read. Use postcard size card and clip them together or number them just in case you accidentally drop them and lose your place.

The best mans wedding speech should be around five minutes in length. Any more then this and you are in danger of boring your listeners especially if they have already sat through a number of other speeches. That said, if you are on a roll and have them laughing in the aisles you can stretch it to around ten minutes but not much longer.

Above all practice makes perfect! Again, make sure you have plenty of time before the big day to thoroughly rehearse. Take every opportunity to practice your lines and if possible recite them in front of a friend or two.

Stand in front of a mirror to check your stance and posture. You can even record yourself on tape to check your modulation and tone.

Memorize your opening and closing lines in particular so regardless of any sections you may forget in between, you will always have a start and finish point embedded in your mind.

It can take weeks to prepare a good wedding speech, which will last only a few minutes but a considered and well thought-out wedding speech will be greatly appreciated by the audience even if you do fluff the odd line or two.

OK, take a deep breath.  This is not going to be so bad.  In fact, it’s not going to be bad at all.  Actually, it’s going to be—dare I say?—fun.

This article is for those of you last-minute napkin-scribblers, or nerve-wracked public speakers. It is even for those of you potentially-too-drunk-to-talk-straight best men, who are just dreading getting up in front of everyone you know—and many you don’t—and delivering a speech that you are convinced is being beamed via satellite to millions around the world.

Well, I am here to tell you that you are fine.  And in good hands.  No need to worry.  No need to freak out or to be sitting in a neck-high pile of crumpled drafts or to be begging your best friend and his wife to elope.  No need for any of that.  What you do need, though, is to remember the following few pointers, and, I promise you, you are in for a smooth landing:

1. This is not gonna change the world.  You are not running for office.  You are not speaking to a joint session of Congress.  You are not (to the best of my knowledge) on American Idol.  You are a best man.  Plain and simple.  You are comfortable with much of your audience, and, perhaps more importantly, they are comfortable with you.  They don’t expect perfect diction, or intellectual wizardry; they just want to share in the warmth and the joy you feel when you think about the bride and the groom.

2. Be casual.  These are your friends, and your family.  Hell, this is a party!  Just because you are wearing a rented tuxedo that makes you feel stiff doesn’t mean you have to talk stiff too.  Be loose and conversational, like you would during any chat you’d have with your friends.

3. Be yourself.  That’s why they hired you.  It is so tempting to do a quick Google search and find a totally canned speech that you could read word-for-word like a news anchor reporting about the mortgage crisis.  Bleh.  Your personal style, your personality are the reasons you are the best man, and the speech should say as much about you as it does about the newlyweds.  Actually, www.TheBestManSpeech.com/usabestman is a great place to find or create a speech that fits your style.  They go through great pains over there to make sure that nothing sounds canned and than everything can be you-ified, so to speak.  You-ification is critical, and www.TheBestManSpeech.com/usabestman, with such a vast quantity of stellar material, can help you get there.

4. Have fun; it’s your show.   Really, this is fun.  Treat it that way.  It is an honor, sure, and people will be paying attention to what you say, but, more than anything else, it is a chance to have some fun.  When else are you gonna be able to dredge up the most embarrassing facts about your best friend and share them in front of everyone you know without retaliation (until you get married, of course)?   When else are you gonna be able to make hundreds of people laugh hysterically or weep with joy with what you have to say?  Take advantage of it; have fun with it.  You know very well how contagious laughter and enjoyment can be.  If people can sense that you are up there having a blast, then they, too, will join in.

There.  Feel better?  A little, at least?  Obviously, these steps will help you deliver a great speech, but the content is also key.  Definitely check out www.TheBestManSpeech.com/usabestman for the world’s largest collection of content that you can mold into the perfect speech for your needs.  Put it all together, and your best manhood will be remembered always—and not because you were too drunk to talk straight.

Gen Wright asked:

Wedding ranks among the most memorable events in a person’s life. Apart from being the bride herself or the groom himself, nothing can be more exciting than being asked to be the best man to your friend’s wedding.

Standing as the best man to your friend’s wedding has its perks - planning the bachelor party, walking down the aisle with the gorgeous maid of honor, and standing beside your friend as he delivers his vows. These best man’s duties are easy and can be considered pleasurable. However, if you are like most people, you might dread what comes after the wedding - the wedding reception and *gasp* the best man speech that everyone is waiting for.

For wedding guests, the ceremonial toast that the best man leads is much anticipated. It gives everyone a glimpse of the kind of person the groom is and what kind of relationship he has with his bride. Be it short or long, somber or funny, the best man speech also sets the mood for the celebration. Delivering a good best man speech is an opportunity for you to convey your message to the newlyweds. It is also a chance for you to shine and be remembered by the guests for the right reason.

If you think you cannot handle the pressure, think again. Preparing and delivering a great best man speech is not cause for distress. Many men who are afraid of public speaking have done it before, and so can you. You just have to practice and be prepared. This does not mean writing down the entire speech and reading it in front of the guests. There is nothing worse than a best man who reads his speech verbatim off a piece of paper. It is as bad as copying it off a book of best man speech examples. It comes across as impersonal and stiff.

You do not have to memorize the speech word for word. There are times when the stress of speaking in front of the crowd can lead to mental block. Things might get awkward when your mind becomes blank and you are unable to pick up where you left off. The best thing to do is to write down the main points of your speech in a cue card. This will serve as your guide as to the direction you want to go. In preparing a draft of your best man speech, steer clear of topics that are taboo. Jokes are fine to keep the mood light as long as they are inoffensive. It is important to be diplomatic and not offend the sensibilities of the guests, which can range from children to the elderly.

The best man speech does not have to be perfect - it just has to be sincere and personalized. You were chosen to be the best man for a reason. So perform your best man duty with pride and deliver the best best man speech of your life.
